LATER THAT EVENING, at 9:00 p.m., the birthday party is in its sixth hour.

Basking in the glow of a delicious meal followed by a decadently satisfying chocolate birthday cake, the adults enjoy a round of post-dinner cordials on the outside deck while the birthday boy plays video games with his older cousins downstairs in his grandparents’ basement.

“The photos from your trip are just amazing, Kate,” Derek remarks.

“Aren’t they?” says Catherine as she turns to the next page of photos on Kate’s iPad. “I especially love this pretty street in Hanalei . . . and this house,” says Catherine as she points to Kate’s photo of the white cottage on Weke Road.

“Hey, it looks like the house in the watercolor Kate bought you,” Derek notes.

Kate walks over and stands behind her mother. She zooms into the photo for a closer look.

“That’s why I got it,” says Kate. “I saw the house on Weke Road and was compelled to take a photo. Then, when I saw the print, and the fact it looked so much like the house I loved, I had to get it because I knew Mom would, too.”

“I do. I treasure that picture. Thank you, dear,” Catherine says as she smiles up at Kate. Kate bends down to kiss her mother’s forehead.

“Kate knows your taste,” grins Carla.

“I miss our little beach house on Martha’s Vineyard,” says Glen. “Do you think we did a wise thing selling it?”

“I know you loved that cottage, dear, but we have the townhome in Florida now. We needed someplace warm to go during the cold winters.”

“You can say that again! Last year was brutal. If I could, I’d pack up Julie and the kids, and we’d be living in a warmer climate like Florida, California, or heck, even Hawaii, in a heartbeat!” exclaims Derek.

“Hawaii, that would be nice,” Carla says dreamily. “Maybe someday.”

“What about you Kate, if you could live in a warmer climate, where would you live?” asks Derek.

Kate smiles broadly, her face suddenly extremely animated, “Kauai, hands down!”

“Well just make sure you get a place with a lot of space . . . you know, for all your family visitors,” Carla grins.
